Switzerland Hiking Guide

Schynige Platte Hike

Switzerland is home to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world, but a little preparation goes a long way. These are the tips I wish I knew before my first hike in the Alps—they'll help you stay safe, comfortable, and make the most of your time on the trail.

1. Pay Attention to the Trail Colors

Swiss hiking trails are color-coded based on difficulty:

  • 🟨 Yellow — Easy hiking trails
  • 🟥⬜ Red-and-white — Mountain hiking trails
  • 🟦⬜ Blue-and-white — Alpine routes for experienced hikers

Don't choose a trail based only on the photos. Make sure the trail matches your hiking experience and fitness level.

2. Start Early

Getting an early start has several advantages:

  • Beat the crowds
  • Avoid the afternoon heat
  • Enjoy clearer mountain views

By late afternoon, trails tend to get busier, and clouds often begin rolling into the mountains.

3. The Weather Can Change in Minutes

It might be warm in the valley but cold and windy at the summit.

Always pack:

  • An extra warm layer
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Additional layers, even during July and August

You'll almost certainly be glad you brought them.

4. Check When the Last Cable Car Comes Down

It's easy to lose track of time when you're enjoying the hike.

Before you head out, check the schedule for the last gondola or cable car. Missing it can turn a fantastic day into a very long hike back down the mountain.

5. Fill Up Your Water Bottle Whenever You Can

Swiss villages are full of public drinking fountains with clean, fresh water.

Once you're out on the trail, however, refill opportunities can be limited. Top off your bottle before starting your hike whenever possible.

6. Wear Actual Hiking Shoes

Some trails look easy on Instagram, but they can be surprisingly rocky, steep, and slippery.

A good pair of hiking shoes will make your hike:

  • Safer
  • More comfortable
  • More enjoyable

7. Follow Swiss Hiking Etiquette

Help keep Switzerland's incredible trails beautiful by following a few simple rules:

  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Close any farm gates behind you.
  • Don't disturb grazing livestock.
  • Pack out everything you bring in.

Respecting the trails helps preserve them for everyone to enjoy.

Final Thoughts

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience Switzerland's incredible landscapes. With a little planning, the right gear, and respect for the mountains, you'll be set up for an unforgettable adventure. Start early, check the weather, and enjoy some of the most spectacular trails in the world.
